A Bombay label traces every print from something within four kilometres of its studio, and prints the source on the inside label.

The practice started as bookkeeping and became the point. Every graphic in the archive is traced from a wall, a shutter or the back of a truck, and the location goes on the inside label.

Why it matters more than it sounds

Streetwear has an old habit of taking vernacular design and selling it back at a markup to people who have never seen the original. A credit line does not fix that on its own. It does make the transaction legible.

The constraint that improved the work

Four kilometres is a small radius. It forces the studio back to the same handful of streets season after season, which is how it started noticing the signwriters rather than just the signs.
